Phillies Beat Braves

The Braves couldn't win to go over .500 in spring training today and the Philadelphia Phillies beat them easily 10-5. Paul Maholm struggled in his second start for the Braves.
The Braves offense did total nine hits for their five runs today, the pitching just didn't do their job. Tyler Pastornicky had a fantastic day at the plate as he had an RBI single and then a three-run homer in the seventh inning, it was his first of the spring. New third baseman Chris Johnson also hit his first home run of the spring in the sixth inning, a solo shot. Ramiro Pena had two hits and scored two runs for the Braves. Justin Upton had a long double off the wall in the first inning and Jason Heyward, Evan Gattis and Todd Cunningham all recorded a hit for Atlanta in the loss.
The pitching struggled most of the day for Atlanta. Maholm had a horrible outing compared to his first start against the New York Yankees. He pitch two and two-thirds innings today and gave up five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He suffered the loss, he is now 0-1 on the spring. Cristhian Martinez also struggled today, giving three runs on three hits, including a home run to John Mayberry Jr.
Craig Kimbrel pitched for the third time this spring and so far he has struggled in each appearance. Today he gave up two runs, only one earned though, on two hits, including an opposite field homer by the Phillies' Ryan Howard. Luis Avilan had a good day, going a scoreless inning and a third while giving up one hit. Prospect Alex Wood gave up two walks and a hit, but still pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Braves are now 3-4 on the spring. They will take the field again tomorrow and play the Washington Nationals at 6:05 p.m. The Braves beat the Nationals back on Tuesday, 9-5. Julio Teheran should get the start tomorrow, while Sean Gilmartin will pitch right after him, as they continue their battle for the fifth spot in the rotation.
