A youth movement is starting to take place within the Atlanta Falcons. Today, they announced that running back Michael Turner, defensive lineman John Abraham and corner back Dunta Robinson have all been cut to free up salary cap space and because they were deemed too old (each one is over 30).
Turner came to the Falcons before the 2008 season as a free agent. He has been the Falcons' leading rusher every year since then. Last season was his worst season yet as a Falcon, as he rushed for only 800 yards, but he did have ten touchdowns. With his release Jacquizz Rodgers becomes Atlanta's number one running back.
Abraham came to Atlanta before 2006 in a trade with the New York Jets. He has been the Falcons' leading defensive lineman every year since. He got his career-high of sacks in a season a few years ago with 16.5 sacks. In his whole time with the Falcons, Abraham totaled 68.5 sacks. Kroy Biermann will step into his place as the number one defensive end on the team, but now the Falcons need to find a number two because they don't have one.
Robinson, an Athens native, came to Atlanta before the 2010 season as a free agent from the Houston Texans. He has been a starter for the Falcons all three year since signing with them. He is known for his bruising hits and he had his best season yet with Atlanta last year, totaling 80 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception. He will be a tough person to replace in the secondary, so corner back will be another priority in free agency.
