The Braves used twelve hits to score their nine runs. Chris Johnson led the offense with four hits, he also drove in two runs on a double in the first inning and scored a run himself. B.J. Upton had one of his best days yet as a Brave as he had three hits, including two doubles, and he scored two runs. Andrelton Simmons hit a three-run homer in the third inning, it was his first of the year. Justin Upton also hit a homer in the third, a solo shot, it was his seventh of the season. Evan Gattis also had a good day, he drove in two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly, Jason Heyward also added a double that drove in a run.
Paul Maholm was terrific for Atlanta on the mound. He pitched seven and two-thirds innings and gave up four hits while striking out seven Nationals' hitters. He also picked up the win and is now 3-0 to begin the year. Luis Avilan relieved Maholm in the eighth inning and got out of a jam by inducing an inning-ending ground out. Cory Gearrin pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.
The Braves are now 11-1 on the season. After having an off day on Monday, they will begin a two-game series with the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday at Turner Field. Kris Medlen (1-1) will make the start for the Braves and take on Jeremy Guthrie (2-0) of the Royals. First pitch is scheduled at 7:10 p.m. Also on a side note, to make room for Luis Ayala on the roster on Friday, the Braves placed Cristhian Martinez on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

Andrelton Simmons hits a three-run home run in the third inning, the Braves beat the Nationals 9-0 on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of Washington.
