The Braves offense had nine hits while scoring their nine runs, but on a bad note they did strike out sixteen times, B.J. Upton struck out in all four of his at-bats. Freddie Freeman had another good day, he had two hits and drove in three runs. Justin Upton hit a two-run homer off of Halladay in the first inning, it was his second of the year. Jason Heyward had two hits, one of those was a two-run homer in the eighth, his first of the year. Evan Gattis' first Major League hit was a solo shot in the fourth off of Halladay, his first of the year. Andrelton Simmons had two hits and scored two runs and Juan Francisco also had a hit and drove in a run.
Paul Maholm had a good outing, he pitched five and two-thirds innings and gave up no runs on six hits and had six strikeouts. He picked up the win and is 1-0 on the year. Anthony Varvaro pitched the final two innings and was perfect, Cory Gearrin and Luis Avilan also pitched in the game and did well. Cristhian Martinez lasted only a third of an inning and gave up three hits, including a two-run double by Chase Utley, who is the only player doing anything offensively so far in the series for the Phillies.
The Braves are now 2-0 on the year and will wrap up their three-game series with the Phillies on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. Kris Medlen will take the mound for Atlanta against the Phillies' Cliff Lee.
