The Braves had seven hits in the loss. Evan Gattis led the team with two hits, Paul Maholm drove him in for the only run with a single in the fifth inning. Justin Upton, Freddie Freeman, B.J. Upton and Gerald Laird all had a hit apiece for Atlanta. The Braves also struck out twelve times, including Dan Uggla in all four of his plate appearances and Chris Johnson in all three of his at-bats.
Maholm started off bad by giving up a home run in the first inning to Pablo Sandoval. He ended up pitching four and a third innings and gave up six runs on eight hits. He suffered the loss and is now 4-4 on the year. Cory Gearrin and Luis Avilan both had scoreless appearances. Anthony Varvaro gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh inning and Jordan Walden gave up a run in the eighth inning. David Carpenter got the final out in the eighth for Atlanta.
The Braves are now 21-15 on the year and they will finish their series with the Giants on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Kris Medlen (1-4) will make the start against the Giants' Tim Lincecum (2-2).
