Braves Take One From Cards

The Atlanta Braves were able to avoid a four-game sweep and defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Atlanta had ten hits in the game. Jordan Schafer, Elliot Johnson and Joey Terdoslavich all had two hits apiece to lead the Braves, Schafer and Johnson each added an RBI in the victory. Andrelton Simmons added a solo homer in the seventh inning, it was his twelfth of the season. Paul Janish and Gerald Laird each added a hit and an RBI in the victory as a lineup of reserves did the majority of the damage in the game. Mike Minor had the only other hit in the game for the Braves as Justin Upton and Freddie Freeman combined to go 0-7 with three strikeouts.
Minor had a great day on the mound and it was just what the Braves needed to take the finale of the series from the Cards. He pitched seven innings and gave up a run on six hits to improve his record to 13-5 on the year. Luis Avilan recorded two outs in the eighth but did give up a run on two hits. Craig Kimbrel came in to get the final out and then shut down St. Louis in the ninth to record his 41st save of the season.
Atlanta is now 78-52 on the year. They will have an off day on Monday before welcoming the Cleveland Indians to town for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. Alex Wood (2-2) will start that game for the Braves against Danny Salazar (1-1) who will be making the fifth start of his career for Cleveland.
