Atlanta had twelve hits in the crazy game. Andrelton Simmons led the team with three hits, but none were bigger than his game-winning triple in the tenth inning that drove in Dan Uggla. He also drove in another run earlier with a double. Chris Johnson had two hits, two RBI's and scored two runs, Jason Heyward and Joey Terdoslavich each had two hits and an RBI. Uggla had a hit and drove in two runs, Justin Upton and Freddie Freeman each had a hit and scored a run and Evan Gattis had an RBI on a ground out.
Brandon Beachy made his much anticipated return from Tommy John surgery, but it wasn't a memorable performance. He ended up going three and two-thirds innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits, including homers to the Rockies' Wilin Rosario and Nolan Arenado. David Carpenter ended up pitching the next two and a third innings and he struck out three and gave up only one hit in that span. Luis Ayala and Luis Avilan both pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth respectively. Jordan Walden attempted to close out the game to give Craig Kimbrel the night off, but he failed as he gave up a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Scott Downs, who was acquired earlier in the day from the Los Angeles Angels, came in and got the final out in the ninth by throwing one pitch and catching a line drive hit right back to him. He then pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the victory and is now 3-3 on the year.
The Braves are 61-45 on the season and they will continue their series with the Rockies tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m. Alex Wood (0-2) will take the mound against Juan Nicasio (6-4) of the Rockies. Also, it was announced after the game that Reed Johnson was placed on the disabled list with an injury he suffered in Sunday night's victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. To take his place on the roster, the Braves called up outfielder Todd Cunningham from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Andrelton Simmons hits the game-winning triple in the bottom of the tenth inning to help the Braves beat the Rockies 9-8 on Monday night.
