Ravens Come Back, Beat Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons first and second stringers looked good on Thursday night against the Ravens, but after that, the team didn't do so hot as the Baltimore Ravens won 27-23.
Atlanta's offense had 422 total yards compared to Baltimore's 249, but the Falcons third string defense gave up 20 points in the fourth quarter. The third string offense didn't fare too well either as they couldn't score in the entire quarter and quarterback Sean Renfree couldn't even keep his final pass in play as time expired with the Falcons threatening to score. Matt Bryant kicked a 45-yard field goal to get Atlanta on the board first. Matt Ryan threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones to cap a impressive drive near the end of the first quarter that made it 10-7 Falcons at the time. Jacquizz Rodgers also had a touchdown in the game with a two-yard run in the second quarter. Jeremy Shelley, a back-up kicker, made two field goals also, one for 29 yards and the other for 42 yards.
Dominique Davis had a much better showing this week, completing eight of his ten passes for 98 yards, he also rushed the ball three times for thirteen yards. Matt Ryan did well too with 97 yards passing to go with his touchdown pass. Josh Vaughan led the Falcons in rushing with five carries for 44 yards. Steven Jackson also had a much better day, rushing the ball eight times for 42 yards. Julio Jones had three receptions, all came on the touchdown drive, for 55 yards while reserve Darius Johnson hauled in six receptions for 50 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Paul Worrilow led the team with six tackles, including a sack. Last week against the Bengals, Worrilow had a team-high eleven tackles as he has really impressed Falcons' coaches in the first two preseason games as he fights for a roster spot. Adam Replogle had the other sack for the defense, one of his two tackles in the game. Asante Samuel had a big interception which he returned for 33 yards that helped set up Rodgers' touchdown run. Dominique Franks also came up with an interception in the game and deflected three other passes thrown by the Ravens.
The Ravens first team didn't show much while they were in the game. Joe Flacco did throw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Smith in the first quarter to give Baltimore a 7-3 lead at the time, but Smith did all the work as he ran for about 75 of those yards. When Tyrod Taylor entered the game though, the offense started clicking. Taylor threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and Asa Jackson returned a punt 78 yards for the winning touchdown with only six minutes left in the game. It's the second week in a row that the Falcons' special teams has given up a punt return for a score.
The Falcons are now 0-2 in the preseason. Their next game will be Saturday, August 24th against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. The Titans are currently 0-1 in the preseason and will play their second game against the Bengals on Saturday before meeting the Falcons next week. The game on the 24th will be at 8 p.m.
