Atlanta had only six hits in the game and they never seemed to string together a rally or anything. Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson led the team with two hits apiece, Freeman also drove in the Braves' only run with a two-out single. B.J. Upton and Kris Medlen had the other two hits in the loss. Justin Upton got ejected in the game for continuously arguing with the home plate umpire over the strike zone and the calls the umpire was making on balls and strikes.
Kris Medlen had it going in the beginning, but then fizzled in the seventh inning. He threw only 78 pitches and the Braves were probably hoping he could have gone further than he did. He ended up pitching six innings and giving up three runs on six hits, including a homer to Matt Holliday. He also suffered the loss and is now 10-12 on the year. Scott Downs pitched in the seventh inning and struck out a batter, David Carpenter gave up two hits but pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Braves.
Atlanta is now 77-51 on the year and they will play the third game of the four-game series with the Cardinals tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. Julio Teheran (10-6) will start the game for the Braves against Shelby Miller (11-8) for St. Louis. The Braves also announced that Brandon Beachy was placed on the disabled list due to elbow inflammation, they hope he will be ready once the fifteen days is up. They brought up Todd Cunningham to take his place on the roster.
Also, Atlanta acquired starting pitcher Freddy Garcia from the Baltimore Orioles for cash. Garcia had a 3-5 record with a 5.57 ERA for the Orioles in eleven appearances with the big-league club this season. He had an 8-3 record with a 2.84 ERA for the Orioles Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk. Garcia will be assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett and will most likely be called up in September when the rosters expand and he will be used in spot starts and long relief.

Kris Medlen throws a pitch in the Braves' 3-1 loss to the Cardinals on Friday night. Medlen faltered in the seventh inning in a game the Braves needed him to come up big.
