Braves Come Back then Lose

Just when it appeared as the Braves were going to make a fantastic comeback on Saturday night, the Phillies' Freddy Galvis had other plans and Atlanta lost 6-5.
Atlanta had seven hits in the loss compared to Philadelphia's fifteen hits. Andrelton Simmons led the Braves with three hits in the game, including a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the ninth with two outs and two strikes. It was Simmons' fifteenth home run of the season. Freddie Freeman had two hits and drove in two runs, Chris Johnson had two hits also and drove in a run. No other Brave had a hit as they struck out twelve times total as a team, B.J. Upton had four strikeouts alone.
Alex Wood didn't bounce back well enough from his last outing and he produced another sub-par outing. He lasted only four and two-thirds innings as he gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks. Luis Ayala, Scott Downs and David Carpenter combined to finish out the fifth and pitch the sixth and the seventh and didn't give up a run while striking out two batters. Downs left the game after breaking his right index finger, he shouldn't miss too much time as the injury occurred on his non-throwing hand. Luis Avilan pitched only two-thirds of the eighth inning and gave up a run on two hits, Anthony Varvaro came in to record the final out. Then it was Freddy Garcia who came into the game in the bottom of the ninth and served up the game-winning homer to Galvis, who began the night with a .211 average and then had four hits against Atlanta. Garcia is now 3-6 on the season.
Atlanta is now 85-56 on the year and they will finish their series with the Phillies tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Paul Maholm (10-10) will try to help the Braves avoid being swept while Cole Hamels (6-13) will take the mound for Philadelphia.
