The Atlanta Braves celebrated Labor Day on Monday afternoon in a big way by defeating the New York Mets 13-5.
The Braves clobbered out seventeen hits in the game. Jordan Schafer led the team with four hits. He also added an RBI, scored two runs and stole three bases to give him 20 steals on the season. Freddie Freeman added two hits, including his eighteenth home run of the year, he also drove in five runs in the victory. Justin Upton, Brian McCann, Chris Johnson, B.J. Upton and Andrelton Simmons all added two hits apiece. Simmons had three RBI's, while McCann and B.J. each had one. Dan Uggla added a hit and Joey Terdoslavich had an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Paul Maholm had a pretty bad day on the mound, but the offense gave him enough support so he could earn the win and move his record to 10-10. He struggled through five innings and gave up three runs on six hits and walked three batters. Luis Ayala then pitched a perfect inning in the sixth. Scott Downs struggled for his first time as a Brave, as he gave up two runs on four hits while recording only one out. David Carpenter relieved him and ended up pitching an inning and two-thirds and didn't allow anyone to get on base. Luis Avilan then pitched a perfect ninth inning while striking out two batters.
Atlanta is now 84-53 on the year and they will continue their series with the Mets tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m. Kris Medlen (11-12) will take the mound for the Braves against Carlos Torres (3-2) of the Mets.
