Atlanta had eight hits in the game while the Cubs had eleven. Chris Johnson had a great game as he led the team with three hits, including his eleventh homer of the year in the second inning and he drove in two runs. Freddie Freeman had a big three-run homer in the third inning, his 22nd of the season. Brian McCann also had a hit and an RBI that drove in the winning run, Andrelton Simmons added a hit and two RBI's in the ninth also. Pitcher Paul Maholm added an RBI double earlier in the game to help himself out. Evan Gattis also added a hit and Jason Heyward scored a run in his return to the lineup, he only played five innings.
Maholm had a decent outing on the mound but he did not factor into the decision. He pitched five and a third innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, including homers to Donnie Murphy and Starlin Castro. Scott Downs, Luis Ayala and Luis Avilan combined to pitch the next inning and two-thirds, Downs and Ayala did well but Avilan gave up the tying run on a homer to Dioner Navarro. David Carpenter pitched a perfect eighth inning and he ended up getting the victory and is 4-1 on the year. Craig Kimbrel came in and pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation.
The Braves are now 91-62 on the season and they will play the Cubs again tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. Kris Medlen (14-12) will take the mound for Atlanta as they try to clinch the division while Travis Wood (9-11) will pitch for Chicago.
